Dog-friendly Dittiscombe, South Devon
Beautiful surroundings and the cottages are kept to a very high standard, very comfortable, the owners make you feel at home and the dogs love the freedom. Lovely place to stay. Salcombe, Dartmouth and Brixham are beautiful places to spend a day, plenty of shops, and walks for the dogs,or seating where you can just relax and watch the world go by.
A beautiful and tranquil setting, just the right place to wind down and relax. The dogs are always welcomed and are completely safe in the surroundings. I would highly recommend this break to anyone. The cottages are sat right in the middle of some of the prettiest villages, towns and beaches. Dartmouth and Salcombe are a delight and the majority of the pubs and shops are dog friendly.
Ruth was very welcoming and friendly. Our cottage (Rafters) was lovely and extremely clean and everything was well thought through – eg items in the kitchen, info about places to visit etc. And the cottages are truly dog friendly (as opposed to just allowing dogs as we’ve experienced at other places).
We had a wonderful relaxing time. The cottage has everything you need for comfort. The location is remote enough to feel away from it all, yet close enough to find shops, dining, pubs & places to go. We took the dogs & enjoyed the walks too. Will definitely return.

Dogs are welcome on all our local beaches and in the cafes and pubs in Slapton and Torcross. Slapton Sands beach is about a 10 minute drive, or a walk of about 1 hour from your cottage door with spectacular walks along the South West Coast Path.
In each of our dog-friendly holiday cottages we supply a copy of Toby’s Dog Walks in South Devon (books 1 and 2); a ‘doggy bag’ of edible goodies; a quantity of fully-biodegradable dog bags, and a torch. We can also supply extra towels, throws, rugs and bowls, emergency dog food and bed, toys, leads and collars on request.
Most of our dog-friendly cottages have enclosed gardens with post and rail fencing with stock-proof wire in between. If you have a dog which might escape, or a very small dog, then please check with Ruth and Jon first before booking your cottage.
There is a charge per dog of £25 per week and £10 for a short break, and further details of this can be found on our FAQ page. We do not allow dogs to be left unattended in the cottages, unless by special arrangement.
Dog friendly South Devon
There are lots of places in this area that you can visit with your dog – beaches and coves, pubs and cafes, steam trains and ferries. Our nearest village, Slapton, boasts two excellent ‘dogs welcome’ pubs, the Tower Inn and The Queens Arms.
Some of the most beautiful beaches in the South Hams are dog friendly every day of the year, with a few having partial restrictions during the summer months. It’s a good idea to remember to check tide times as some of these natural coves and estuary beaches can almost disappear at high water.
Using the South West Coast Path you will come across some spectacular coastal scenery and it can be done in bite-size chunks. For instance park at East Prawle and walk east to Lannacombe, Great Mattiscombe, Hallsands and Beesands, stopping off at the dog friendly pub called The Cricket Inn and on to Torcross. Or from East Prawle go west to Gammon Head and Mill Bay at East Portlemouth where you will find the Venus café with outdoor seating. The coastal path from Bolberry Down either west to Hope Cove, Thurlestone and Bantham, or east towards Salcombe has spectacular scenery. There are dog-friendly pubs and restaurants at Hope Cove (Cove Cafe Bar), The Beach House at South Milton and at Bantham (The Sloop Inn).
You’ll find a list of favourite beaches on our Beaches of the South Hams page, and lots more information on our dedicated Dog-friendly website. Or read Ruth’s blogs: New Adventures with your dog in the South Hams or a Dog-friendly Welcome in South Devon.
