Dittiscombe Holiday Cottages is located mid-way between Kingsbridge and Dartmouth and is just a short drive from plenty of dog-friendly beaches, estuaries and the South West Coast Path.

Wildlife & Nature

The Kingsbridge-Salcombe Ferry the Rivermaid, is still plying it’s way between the two towns, stopping off at creeks and doing a little birdwatching along the way. It’s a slow and relaxing method of travel. It will continue until mid-October and for more information visit their website. Some wildlife events are still on at the Field Study Centre in Slapton, just two miles from Dittiscombe, with wildlife watching outings and safaris in and around the freshwater lagoon, woodlands and fields near the village. The South Devon Area of Outstanding Nature Beauty have a selection of events from early bird breakfast walks with a ranger to apple juice and cider tasting tours.

Food & Drink

During your holiday you can buy local from our very own Kingsbridge Farmers’ Market which operates 1st & 3rd Saturdays every month in the Kingsbridge Town Square. There are various beach cafes and shack: The Beachhouse at South Milton for a varied Mediteranean menu; The Gastrobus for fresh beach food especially good for hungry surfers; and Britannia on the Beach Cafe for the freshest fish in the area.

Family Days Out

Start Point Lighthouse, about 6 miles from Dittiscombe is situated on one of the most exposed peninsulas on the English Coast. You can visit the lighthouse and enjoy a guided tour organised by Trinity HouseSouth Devon Railway is one of South Devon’s best loved tourist attractions and is the longest established steam railway in the South West. Take a canoe trip with Singing Paddles on one of the gentle waterways near us, it’s always a favourite with any age group and is dog friendly too. Contact Dave on singingpaddles@hotmail.co.uk.

Outdoors & Sports

Stand Up Paddle boarding is a gentle way of moving along the rivers and estuaries in this area – book a session either with Waterborn, situated on the Kingsbridge estuary next to the Crabshell Inn, or Discovery Surf School at Bigbury-on-sea, TQ7 4AZ. Dust off those trainers and walking boots and get yourself onto the South West Coast Path for the UK’s most beautiful charity challenge! The South West Coast Path Challenge is back this October and aims to break the world record for the number of times the path is walked or run in one month.

Heritage, Art and Music

On 20th September join Devon Radio together with South Devon AONB staff to find out more about the wartime story of the area around Torcross and Beesands, and explore part of this spectacular coastline. A circular walk around 4 miles finishing with a short slide show, showing how the area has changed and the wartime activities during D Day practises. This walk will be part of Radio Devon’s Walk Devon series. There is always something fun going on at the South Devon Railway including with the weekend of 3-5 November featuring a popular diesel gala, with plenty of action for diesel fans, a bar on board and a visiting engine. Talented local artists are exhibited at both Harbour House in Kingsbridge and Avon Mill Garden Centre near Loddiswell. The South Hams Arts Forum will be holding their annual Arts Trail from 14th – 29th October with 60 artists in 18 workshops and galleries exhibiting throughout the South Hams.

Local Events, Houses & Gardens

The Kingsbridge Vintage Bus Running Day is back on Saturday 17th September. Its a free day out and an opportunity to travel the South Hams on classic buses. From the buses you will be able to see sights not possible from a car as you drive down the Devon lanes with high banks and hedgerows. More information here.
