Wonderful Cottage (Rafters). So dog friendly. Brilliant setting. Ruth and Jon on hand if needed. I would strongly recommend Dittiscombe to friends and family-but having discovered this gem may be I should keep it to myself!! as don’t want it to be fully booked when I next wish to go!

A friendly welcome to a cosy & well equipped cottage made our stay very enjoyable. Local information in the folder in the cottage helped us plan our days. Lovely woodland dog walk from cottage door.

The cottages are particularly dog friendly but scrupulously clean with sensible rules for dog owners. Each cottage has its own fenced small garden and the local walks round the cottages are excellent.

Dovecote is a comfortable, cosy cottage and we thoroughly enjoyed our break there. It is a great place to bring the dog with a lovely garden and walks in the surrounding grounds, our whippet had a lovely time.

The setting is beautiful and the landscape managed to preserve nature, whilst providing ample opportunity for holiday-makers to enjoy the countryside. It is safe and quiet – perfect for dog owners.

Dittiscombe Cottages are in an idyllic setting. The valley is beautiful with lovely walks. The cottage (Rafters) we stayed in was very pretty, extremely comfortable and lots of extra touches. Ruth and Jon were extremely helpful and nothing was too much trouble.
It is a dog lovers paradise ……..

A brilliant holiday for dog owners. Lots of walks and dog friendly places to eat/drink in the surrounding areas. The Queens Arms in Slapton was very friendly and there were several places to go with dogs in Salcombe and Dartmouth. Ruth and Jon were very welcoming.

Have to say its the best accommodation for holidaymakers with dogs as the enclosed garden means the pets can play in a secure area . . . A gem of a find for dog lovers who want to holiday with their pet.

Dog friendly South Devon

There are lots of places in this area that you can visit with your dog – beaches and coves, pubs and cafes, steam trains and ferries.  There are dog-friendly beaches at nearby Slapton Sands and Torcross and our nearest village, Slapton, boasts two excellent ‘dogs welcome’ pubs, the Tower Inn and The Queens Arms.  Other dog-friendly beaches include Bantham, Bigbury, Salcombe North Sands, Beesands, Thurlestone Sands and South Milton Sands.

ditdogsrafa2-16Blackpool Sands has a total dog restriction between April and October, and Bantham and Bigbury both have a partial restrictions between May and October, but there is access to the estuary banks at low tide all year round.  Further information about beaches can be found on our Beaches page and the Kingsbridge Tourist Information website.

Visit our separate Dog Friendly website for lots more information about the area and suggested itineraries.

For sandy beaches try Mill Bay, which is situated opposite Salcombe, combined  with a coastal walk to Gara Rock; or the soft sands of the Avon Estuary either at Bigbury or Bantham  where although there is a restriction on the main beaches during the summer months, you can walk up the estuary at low tide.

South West Coast PathUsing the South West Coast Path you will come across some spectacular coastal scenery and it can be done in bite-size chunks. For instance park at East Prawle and walk east to Lannacombe, Great Mattiscombe, Hallsands and Beesands, stopping off at the dog friendly pub called The Cricket Inn and on to Torcross.  Or from East Prawle go west to Gammon Head, Gara Rock (Gara Rock Restaurant is dog-friendly) and Mill Bay at East Portlemouth where you will find the Venus café with outdoor seating.  The coastal path from Bolberry Down either west to Hope Cove, Thurlestone and Bantham, or east towards Salcombe has spectacular scenery.  There are dog-friendly pubs and restaurants at Hope Cove (Cove Cafe Bar), The Beach House at South Milton and at Bantham (The Sloop Inn).

On all coastal walks you will need to watch out for livestock as some of the land adjoining the path is grazed by sheep and cattle, and some almost sheer cliff drops too!

Dogs from Overseas

The Pet Travel Scheme is now more favourable to guests from overseas and allows pets to come into the UK providing they meet certain rules.  Find out more information from Defra’s Pet Travel Scheme.
